In a move designed to restrict the importation of used cars to Pakistan in order to protect the auto industry in Pakistan, the Government issues the “Import of Vehicle Rules 2006.” law according to a report in the Peninsulaquatar.
The new law will increase the amount of paperwork to be completed such as completing two lengthy certificates, earning and gift undertaking, in order to import a car.
This move adds to an earlier attempt to restrict car imports by expatriate Pakistanis which restricted the import of used cars under the transfer of residence scheme to cars which are five years old or less.
The gift scheme only allows car imports as a gift for a blood relatives such as son, daughter, parents, sister, brother, husband, wife but not for any person under eighteen years of age.
According to The Nation in an article published in 2005, the Pakistani domestic car manufacturers had failed to meet the demands of consumers, and the cars that are produced are often poor quality but the prices have risen.
And again according to The Dawn in 2006, car imports to Pakistan have actually increased between August 2005 and March 2006.
Although the Government have made it harder to import cars, it is still not impossible to do so. It just takes a little bit longer.
